Yesterday evening I was overcome with this urgency that we need to give, we, as in "Hurd & Honey". You know, it has really only been about six months since we have been able to say that we are sustained by the income we make running our small business...maybe even less time than this. (Praise God!) Earlier in the year I was still full-time teaching as Sam was pushing away at making new products and establishing our garage as a workshop. It's amazing how quickly things can change. But, when you are self-employed you see where every penny goes, and you then see how many of those pennies can be given away, as you really only need so many for yourself.

We feel greatly thankful, and blessed to be able to live this "small-business life".

After doing hours of research I decided that maybe this year would be too short notice to put something together, and give it a go, as far as pulling people together to raise money as a community. And I am known for last minute elaborations, so I decided to back off...and wait...pray...and see if the idea would come together and work.

Then this morning I saw a post on Facebook -> "Backpacks of Hope"
I showed Sam, and we were instantly moved, and now feel called to act.

The "Backpacks of Hope" project is a small part of a larger project known as The 2013 Legacy Project.

This year, being our first charity fundraiser endeavor...we decided to keep it simple. Our goal is to raise enough money to simply purchase two "Backpacks of Hope" -> $200.00.

How will we do this?

Our campaign is called "Light Gives Hope"
December 12th 2013 - December 25th 2013

We are asking you to simply donate $8.00. With your donation you will receive a handmade, reclaimed wood, tea light square, made by us.

You will receive your little square in the mail, and every time you light it, it will be a reminder that you gave hope to these young children in Haiti, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe. All of the earnings (minus the cost of shipping) - about $6.50 per square - will go towards purchasing "Backpacks of Hope". Will you give with us?

Just a little tealight...

Holiday Cheer

We have been having quite the fun lately preparing for the Happy Hollydays Bazaar! Last year we participated, and despite the hours of preparation and last minute chaos that are involved, it was well worth it. And they play Christmas music the entire two days!!!!!!!

This year we decided to go ahead and make holiday phrase wooden signs, nothing fancy, but a way to add a touch of excitement to one's home during the holidays.

Signs can be customized and painted. Families are able to purchase them as a winter break craft project for their children.

Now, it does seem early for all of this, but in reality, we're almost too late! Craft stores had Christmas trees up in late September. We are pushing November here and just trying to possibly jump into the rush.

So far we have planned to create the following phrases:

"MERRY & BRIGHT"
"SILENT NIGHT"
"MERRY CHRISTMAS"
"NOEL"
"SEASON'S GREETINGS"
"JOY TO THE WORLD"
"DEAR SANTA..."
"JINGLE"
.....

NYC Studio Chevron Table

The making of a small Reclaimed Wood Chevron Table 

(for our sweet customer C.L.).

The final phase... getting the tables ready and labeled for customer assembly.

A while back when we first had the conversation of designing a table that customers had to "put together", we struggled. The motive was to offer something that wasn't a fortune to ship.  And when the table and the legs can all fit together in one smaller box the customer saves a substantial cost. 

Sam wondered if this would put into question his craftsmanship, his level or ability as a woodworker, as joinery is a big deal to woodworkers. But someone gave us some great advice not too long ago; he has been a woodworker for over thirty years...

"You have to come to a point where you have to decide what is most important to your customers." 

In this case, our customers want something special (handmade, unique) and reclaimed. They appreciate the style and look that we offer. We've created a way to offer this at a price that allows our customers to have these pieces in their homes.
